More about the Friendship 33

Beautiful Friendship 33 with wing keel and scoop with wind vane now for sale. Very clean and tidy and cared for by real watersports enthusiasts, now for sale due to health reasons.

Now a bit of a story about the wing keel: The wing keel was designed in 1983 for the Australian America's Cup boat, which promptly won that cup with it! The design was attributed to the Dutchman Piet van Ossanen, although this is denied again nowadays.
The purpose of the wings is precisely that a less deep keel can be used because the keel as a whole becomes more effective. The wings counteract the flow underneath the keel, making it more effective (much like the wing tips or winglets at the ends of aircraft wings).
When heeling, the leeward wing also digs deeper and helps to limit leeway. A wing keel is in any case (at least originally) not intended to make it easier to dry out with, although that can of course be the case, but rather to sail better/faster within a certain measurement rating.

The Friendship 33 is a beloved Dutch sailing yacht, designed with a perfect balance between comfort, seaworthiness, and performance. This specific model is equipped with a wing keel, which ensures a lower center of gravity and better stability, without compromising on draft. This makes the yacht excellently suited for both the IJsselmeer and the Wadden Sea, as well as for offshore trips.

Design and construction: The classic lines of the Friendship 33 remain timelessly beautiful. The yacht is built with high-quality materials and a solid polyester hull. The wing keel gives it extra lift in lighter winds and makes it possible to sail in shallower waters — a great advantage for those who love varied sailing areas.

Sailing characteristics: The Friendship 33 is known for its pleasant and reliable sailing characteristics. The yacht responds smoothly to the helm, tracks well, and is also easy to handle solo. Thanks to the balanced rig and the wing keel, the boat is relatively fast, yet remains comfortable and safe — even in stronger winds.

Interior: inside, the yacht is surprisingly spacious and bright. The warm wood finish and practical layout make staying on board pleasant for longer trips. Equipped with 2 sleeping cabins + saloon settee, spacious galley with stove, refrigerator and sink, wet room with toilet and washbasin, and plenty of storage space and good ventilation.

The Friendship 33 with wing keel is an excellent choice for the sailor looking for a reliable, comfortable and versatile yacht with pleasant sailing characteristics. Whether you want to cruise leisurely or make longer sailing trips, this vessel offers reliability and sailing pleasure in all conditions. A versatile quality yacht of Dutch manufacture with an excellent price/quality ratio.

7/8 rig

I also recently switched from a "classic" rig to a larger boat with a 7/8 rig. It took some getting used to, but I'm now extremely happy with it. The boat has much more sail area relative to weight and boat size compared to my old rig, and sails accordingly more smoothly, more sportively, more lively and more fun.

In recent years a lot of maintenance has been carried out and items have been replaced, such as
— batteries
— mattresses
— rigging
— equipment
— rudder
— roller furling jib/genoa
— LED lighting
— starter motor
— the saildrive gaiter
— the propeller
— engine water pump
— mast support
— keel plates and bolts
