Occasionally a truly exceptional yacht comes up for sale. Barrabas is one such yacht. In fact, she is unique: the only yacht of her class in the world constructed entirely from Titanium enriched 316L Stainless Steel, including the hull, deck, superstructure, mast, anchors and deck fittings. This extremely strong yacht also benefits from extensive upgrades. Hand-built in France to a design by renowned naval architect, François Charpentier the material for this yacht was quality-tested and supplied by the national French Stainless Steel fabricator. Although construction was completed in 1991, Barrabas was not actually floated until 1993. In the interim, she was used as an exhibit at international steel trade fairs. All welding was done using inert argon gas to eliminate carbon contamination in the steel. The result is an extremely strong hull and superstructure. 316L Stainless Steel is more forgiving than regular mild steel traditionally used for steel yacht construction. On impact, 319L Stainless Steel is more likely to fold rather than split. This quality gives Barrabas the highest degree of safety at sea. The centre cockpit deck layout, the Stainless Steel mast supported by 12 stays, the strongly built keel and the skeg-hung rudder guarantee an extremely safe and seaworthy yacht under any circumstances. Barrabas comes with a full suit of sails in good condition. The yacht is equipped with an Ampair wind generator, a solar panel array, a Hydrovane self-steering system and back-up alternators. All deck gear is over-engineered, sized to meet the demands of a 70-foot yacht. On-deck fuel cages can accommodate an additional 300 litres. This is a yacht with proven serious blue water cruising capability. Barrabas benefits from a comprehensive range of navigational aids including a Winpro 32 satellite image receiver, wireless TackTick instruments and a new Furuno chart plotter/radar. In 2005, Barrabas underwent an extensive re-fit programme including sandblasting and resealing the hull. With safety paramount for offshore sailing, the yacht is also equipped with a 406 MHz GPS EPIRB, a 6-man liferaft, and an unsinkable dinghy with sailing rig. The interior is spacious and comfortable. There is a large chart table and fully equipped galley with 2 sinks and pressurized hot and cold water. Ample storage space and 4 to 6 berths (2 in the aft cabin, 2 in the forecabin and 2 in the saloon) ensure the comfort of the crew. Furthermore, there are large diesel and water tanks and a low electrical consumption, 5-litre/per hour Katadyn water-maker. Power is provided through 4 sealed Lifeline AGM 210 amp-hour batteries. A fifth AGM Lifeline battery provides cranking power to the 60hp Lombardini commercial heavy-duty engine which has looged only 1,500 hours. An extensive inventory of spare parts is included. A remarkable feature adorns each bow, a depicition of Neptune. This is not painted on but is etched into the raw steel. A sculptor used an angle grinder to make thousands of tiny nicks in the steel, some angled to reflect light and others to cast shadow to create a 3-dimensional effect. Barrabas also has an extraordinary sailing pedigree. In October 2005, adventurer Adrian Flanagan, her current owner, set sail on the Alpha Global Expedition, the first single-handed vertical circumnavigation. This epic voyage was completed on 21 May 2008 when Barrabas arrived back in southern England escorted by warships of the Royal Navy. Barrabas is only the 12th yacht to have sailed single-handed west about Cape Horn against prevailing winds and currents and is the first yacht ever to have entered Russia’s arctic territorial waters single-handed. The full story of Barrabas’s historic voyage is recounted in Adrian’s bestselling book ‘Over The Top’ published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson in November 2008. In 2009, the International Ocean Cruising Club awarded Adrian the prestigious Order of Merit. There are various film clips on YouTube. Barrabas is moored in the Basin á Flots in Bordeaux’s city centre, France, 15 minutes from the international airport at Meringnac. Barrabas is offered at a superb price to reflect the need for some cosmetic refurbishment. After her epic voyage, the Treadmaster decking needs replacing, cabin windows require re-sealing, internal and external woodwork would benefit from sanding and re-varnishing and the forward bulkhead requires re-instatment. Costs for these minor works are estimated at €5,000. If you looking for a unique, well-equipped and ultra seaworthy yacht constructed to the highest standards and with the best materials then this yacht is a real opportunity.
